Send Cards to Plano Nursing Homes Support Seniors and their Caregivers Because of the unprecedented spread of COVID-19, nursing homes are following strict government recommendations to protect residents and nursing home staff by restricting all nonessential entry into their facilities. However, this means that many residents can no longer enjoy their much-anticipated visits with friends and family, which is crucial for their emotional and mental health. Please sign-up to buy & drop-off the food items below Refrigerated items must be dropped off (or I can pick up) ON Tuesday, February 2nd. Non-refrigerated items can be dropped off (or I can pick up) between now and Tuesday, Feb 2. Call or text Michelle Thornton, 972.974.0364, to arrange for food hand-off (practicing social distancing). We will assemble the 54 individual lunches & deliver on Wed, February 3rd, to people who have food & shelter insecurity. We deliver our nutritious lunches to Streetside Showers, a non-profit providing showers once a week to those experiencing homelessness in E. Plano. Choose your signup slots to sign up. Thank you!Note: you can sign-up for multiple slots. The number in parentheses is how many of that food item we need e.g. we need 6 sets of 9 sandwiches (for a total of 54 sandwiches) Due to past generosities from YOU, I also added other supplies that Streetside Showers needs for clients. SIGN-UP HEREThe Wellness Center for Older Adults (an Honorary Member of Plano West Rotary) is asking for OUR help this month by providing supplies for first-time attendees to their Front Porch event creating "community" with others. The theme for this next event is "Valentine's Day - Sharing a Whole Lot of Love", and the event will be held in late January. Please see the items below for 10 first-timer gift baskets, & sign up! Many items are probably available at your local dollar store. Thank you! Daniel Pattarini is a Foreign Service Officer in the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ Office of Public and Congressional Affairs. Prior to his current position, Mr. Pattarini served as the Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg from 2016 until July 2019. While in Luxembourg, he also served as the mission’s back up Consular Officer. Mr. Pattarini’s first three overseas assignments were in the Middle East. In 2014-15, he served as the Environment, Science, Technology and Health Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. From 2012 to 2014 he served in Cairo, Egypt as an Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer and Consular Officer. Mr. Pattarini joined the Department in 2009 and served his first tour as the Deputy Public Affairs Officer in Muscat, Oman from 2009 to 2011. He speaks Arabic and French. Before coming the U.S. Department of State, Mr. Pattarini worked for almost 5 years at the Institute for International Education, where he served as a Program Officer for the Fulbright Visiting Scholars Fund and then as Senior Outreach Manager for the King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST) Scholarship program. Mr. Pattarini earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Government at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA and his Master’s Degree in International Affairs at American University in Washington, DC. He is married and has three children and a Labrador retriever. |

She’s dabbled in graphic design for lawyers (don’t be jealous), handbag design, art directing fashion shoots, retail advertising and photography. She is a chips-and-salsa enthusiast. She was also the editor of her high school literary magazine. Coincidence? We think not

John Hewko is the general secretary and chief executive officer of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. From 2004 to 2009, Hewko was vice president for operations and compact development for the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a U.S. government agency established in 2004 to deliver foreign assistance to the world’s poorest countries. At MCC, he was the principal United States negotiator for foreign assistance agreements to 26 countries in Africa, Asia, South America, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union. During his tenure, he completed the negotiation of assistance agreements totaling $6.3 billion to 18 countries for infrastructure, agriculture, water and sanitation, health, and education projects. Prior to joining MCC, Hewko was an international partner with the law firm Baker & McKenzie, specializing in international corporate transactions in emerging markets. He helped establish the firm’s Moscow office and was the managing partner of its offices in Kyiv and Prague. Hewko has been a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University, and a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He has published papers and articles in leading U.S. and international publications, and he has spoken extensively on political and business issues dealing with the former Soviet Union, Central Europe, Africa, and Latin America. He is also a member of the Council of Foreign Relations. Hewko holds a law degree from Harvard University, a master’s in modern history from Oxford University (where he studied as a Marshall Scholar), and a bachelor’s in government and Soviet studies from Hamilton College in New York. As general secretary, Hewko leads a diverse staff of 800 at Rotary International’s World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA, and seven international offices. He and Marga are major donors to the Foundation. They live in Evanston. |
