We are excited to have all 3 of our 2018 ($2,000) Scholarship Recipients come share their experiences from their first semester in college/university!  Welcome!!

Jim is a friend of Glen & Michelle's who also has an interest in service to others.  

Jim will talk about how it’s possible for us to provide the capital needed by small businesspeople and entrepeneurs in the developing world by making small loans (normally $25). It’s an amazing and easy way to help our neighbors in other countries, and will open your eyes to the actual work situations of people around the world. (They are much different than you’d expect!)

Michelle's Note: Jim will likely demonstrate using Kiva.org.  Kiva also has different Rotary clubs (optionally) signed up as a group or team.

Michelle will facilitate the Assembly meeting, including important opportunities for YOU to provide feedback now that we are half-way through this Rotary year.

CCHC stands for the Collin County Homeless Coalition.

Tuesday, 1/22, LaShon Ross will speak with us about homelessness in Collin County & during the lunch hour we will assemble 35 sandwich lunches for delivery Wednesday, 1/23.

Wednesday, 1/23, 1-3 PW volunteers will be serving sandwiches for our community members who are currently experiencing homelessness. The sandwiches will be served at the Assistance Center of Collin County (900 18th Street, Plano, TX 75074) from 2-4:30 PM for those receiving services from partner organization Streetside Showers.

The Assistance Center of Collin County brings carefully qualified and prompt short-term assistance to individuals and families in financial crisis to help them regain self-sufficiency. Through discerning programs, guidance and funds, we help stabilize Collin County families’ home economies to fight homelessness, hunger and poverty as well as help protect our entire community from a wave effect of negative impacts. 

We have started a new tradition (last year) of having a social event on "5th Tuesdays".

This 5th Tuesday also happens to be Plano West's 39th Anniversary, so we will celebrate our history!

We will meet at Greek Isles 6:00 - 7:30pm, please bring spouses, friends, fellow Rotarians, and former Plano West Rotarians!  Please also bring your Plano West stories to share!

The club dues will provide some appetizers, first come first served.  Drinks and any other food items are to be handled with your server, please. :)

Charlie is a fellow Rotarian, and will share information about Scouting:

I will talk about the regional food drive which will be taking place the last two weeks of February.  I can give an overview of the history of the project, its impact, and perhaps begin some dialogue as to how Rotary can collaborate if your club members want to do so.  There are also lots of changes going on in Scouting and I would be open to discussing any questions regarding that process.

Stephanie will give an overview of what the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is, why it was founded and their mission, and what they’re working on for the future. She’ll also talk about upcoming educational programming and special events that may be of interest to your members.

Don't miss this program, as our very own club member is an amazing vegetable gardener, and he has shared his harvests with Plano West Rotary for many years!

She will talk about the mission of the Chorus, their diversity, music, and the wonderful children, as well as her role as Artistic Director.

Some of our Plnao West Board Members will each present information about this year's achievements and status, thanks to all of you!

We will have our annual meeting at Barron Elementary school, instead of Greek Isles, but no fear, Greek Isles will still cater our usual awesome lunch!

Plano West has been supporting Teaching with Jamaica for years, as they travel south to share current teaching practices and curriculum ideas with local teachers, as well as materials.  Donna will give us an update on their program for this year, as well as how their trip went last summer.

Plano West is sponsoring our Clark High School Interact Club for the first year - woohoo!

The incoming president and board with come share the accomplishments of this past Rotary Interact year, and share this new board's plans for next year.

Just like last time, we will pack up about 35 lunches for Collin County homelessness during our meeting!

DESCRIPTION:

When your aging loved one gets ill, injured or can no longer care for his or herself, the last thing they want to do is leave their home. Becoming their caregiver may not be possible, especially if they live far away, or if you are already their caregiver, you may find the burden of their care is overwhelming.

According to Eric vanGoethem, owner of Amada Senior Care Dallas, more and more families are opting for in-home professional caregiving, in which a licensed and trained home health aide provides assistance with such activities of daily living as bathing, dressing, toileting and eating, cooking, cleaning and laundry, medication management and doctors’ appointments, and companionship.

In his talk, "How to Care for Your Loved One at Home without Breaking the Bank," Eric will share with your members:

• The different kinds of home health services
• Why they should plan for in-home care, even if they don’t need it now
• How Medicare, Medicaid and long-term care insurance may cover much of the cost

ERIC'S BIO INFO:

Eric vanGoethem spent much of his career indirectly helping sick people get better as a medical equipment sales rep to medical facilities, but it wasn’t until severe illness hit his own family that he realized he could make a bigger impact on the lives of patients and their families through professional caregiving.

Now the owner of the Dallas and North Dallas franchises of Amada Senior Care, Eric saw first-hand how overwhelmed his mother was when his father got Creutzfeld-Jakob disease, a rare, degenerative, fatal brain disorder that may involve mental deterioration, involuntary movements, blindness, weakness of extremities, and coma. Eric’s family was never told about in-home caregivers, and it made him determined to make caregiving available to families in need.

Before joining Amada Senior Care, Eric was Area Sales Manager for Medtronic, the world's largest medical device company which develops and manufactures devices and therapies to treat more than 30 chronic diseases, including heart failure, Parkinson's disease, urinary incontinence, Down's syndrome, obesity, chronic pain, spinal disorders and diabetes.

Before that, Eric was Director of Sales and Marketing for Surgical Care Affiliates, one of the largest providers of outpatient surgery in the United States, and Sales Representative for Mizuho OSI, the world’s leading manufacturer of specialty spine and orthopedic surgical tables.

Eric holds both a BSBA in Management Information Systems and an MBA in Marketing from Auburn University.
